CRF Honda Racing press release:
THE grand final of the 2015 Penrite Australian Supercross Championship presented by Ryco Filters played out in front of a capacity crowd last Saturday night at Knights Stadium in Melbourne, Victoria, and after an enthralling program of racing, CRF Honda Racing riders Joel Wightman, Joel Cigliano and Drew Cigliano completed the series in the thick of the action.
In the hotly contested SX2 Championship, Wightman continued his season-ending hard charging form by nailing down a solid fourth place finish in the Final behind Jackson Richardson, Wade Hunter and Lewis Woods.
The impressive result hoisted Wightman up the series standings to finish a strong sixth overall in the SX2 Championship.
“It was an awesome night for me in Melbourne and I’m so happy to finish the year off with another great result,” enthuses Wightman. “The track was dry and dusty during the day for practice and timed qualifying, although once the night show came around the moisture stayed in the ground and made for an awesome race track.
“I was pumped to get a good start in the Final for the second round in a row, and then I rode a smooth race with minimal mistakes to finish fourth, which moved me up to sixth in the Championship.
“I’m really happy with that, after entering the Championship with a shoulder injury and with this being my first year in SX2.
“I have to say a massive thanks to Mark Luksich, my family and the all sponsors and supporters that have helped put together the CRF Honda Racing team this year, it’s been a great season.”
In the Junior Lites category, brothers Joel and Drew Cigliano maintained the consistent form they have shown all Championship long, the duo both finishing inside the top ten of each of three Championship points paying races.
With a 5-5-7 score card on the night, Joel Cigliano racked up the necessary points to see him climb up on the Championship podium after the event, finishing third overall in the final standings behind Cooper Pozniak and Jake McGlashan. Meanwhile Drew Cigliano wrapped up sixth place in the Junior Lites Championship standings.
CRF Honda Racing team owner Mark Luksich was delighted with the team’s performance.
“I’m really pleased with the results at the Melbourne Supercross and CRF Honda Racing’s overall performance in the Australian Supercross Championship, as well as the season as a whole,” said Luksich.
“For a first-year effort, everyone involved in the CRF Honda Racing team has delivered a truly professional performance that they can all be proud of, and all the team riders and their families deserve to be congratulated.
“All our CRF Honda Racing team partners and sponsors also deserve huge thanks, for without their fabulous support, it wouldn’t be possible to go racing on a national level.”
