Styke takes a supercross season PB at Jimboomba

KTM Australia press release:

KTM Motocross Racing Team rider Luke Styke is sure he is on the verge of his first big result in the premier class of the Australian Supercross Championships after a championship-best result in the series fourth round at Jimboomba, south of Brisbane.

Still in his rookie season of SX one racing, Styke finished sixth in the 20-lap main event which went to Dan Reardon ahead of Matt Moss and Kade Mosig.

In SX2 racing Lewis Woods became the first rider to break the winning streak of championship leader Jimmy Decotis when he rode to an impressive win at Jimboomba.

Woods solidified his lead in the opening lap, and the Bacchus Marsh rider carefully managed his position on the slippery track in hot conditions, to win ahead of Decotis and Luke Arbon and move himself into a share of fourth place in the championship.

After sharing the front-running the start of the race, KTM Newcastle’s Dylan Wills was denied a likely podium finish when Decotis swept across his front wheel on the way into turn, sending him tumbling, but he remounted to finish fifth. KTM Factory Support rider Caleb Ward was absent from the round, as he recovers from recent illness and injury.

Junior Lites racing, KTM Newcastle’s Cooper Pozniak maintained his lead in the championship despite a freak chain joining-link failure causing him to DNF the opening moto. Pozniak bounced back to finish second and first in the next two motos, salvaging ninth place for the evening.

Kyle Blunden, KTM Motocross Racing Team Technician – “The steps forward we are taking are good. Luke qualified with a time that was much, much closer than previous rounds and had a brilliant holeshot in his first heat. Seat. In the final he just rode a bit defensive and tightened up and got passed a couple of times, but he’s making progress which is really what are looking for. Being his first year at 450 Supercross he’s just got to keep making progress, because as we know the 450 can bite you pretty hard if you’re not careful.”

Luke Styke – “Obviously not progressed since round one and we are getting better and better every weekend, but I just feel like I want to improve a bit faster. But we’re close, we’re real close. The bike’s good and I’m good, we just need to work on a couple of little things, my racecraft, that sort of thing. I’m still making a few little mistakes and I think that’s the key. Even though it was hot, I didn’t feel like I was physically fatigued, just a bit tight still. The track was a bit crumbly and they couldn’t get much water into it during the day, but it wasn’t too bad, it was consistent. But we are close, we are real close to cracking a really good result, it’s taking its time but I’m progressing a little bit and that’s what matters.”

Lewis Woods – “It feels awesome to win. It’s been a long time coming in the Pro class, but everything fell into place. The track was tough and it was 40 degrees at some points of the day, so, fitness played a big part. I know I needed that start and I’ve been working on them. It was a last-minute decision to jump on and give it a crack after my injury last year, so I went with the KTM and the bike’s really good. The first round the thing was pretty much dead stock and now we’re getting it dialled – it feels real good. Jimmy’s unbeaten streak was running through my head, he was right there, but I was reading my mechanic’s board and I knew I had enough to play it safe a little bit and still get the win.”

Cooper Pozniak – “The track was really good, I really like the layout. I’ve been training all week in the heat so I was alright with it. In the first moto I snapped my chain and got a DNF but I kept the points lead with one more round to go. I was 45 points clear coming into tonight but I’ll still take a 10 point lead into the next round, so I’ll be sweet.”
