Kiwi talent uncertain for final two rounds of the season.
New Zealand MX2 Champion Kayne Lamont is recovering from a broken collarbone sustained at the Raymond Terrace round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals on Sunday during practice.
The Husqvarna Red Bull WIL Sport NZ Racing rider started the season with a bang by winning at Broadford, but has since seen his title hopes unravel and this latest broken collarbone effectively ends any final title hopes. He also claimed victory at the Wonthaggi round.
“I was on my last hot lap of qualifying when I came around a 180 turn and the main line had pushed out to the edge of the track,” Lamont explained when contacted by MotoOnline this week. “My rear wheel pushed through and slid off the side of the track and the bike highsided me off – I landed on my shoulder.
“I have had my X-rays sent to a surgeon to see what he thinks about operating on it or not. So I will know within the next few days if I’ll be back over or not.
After such a promising start to the season, a series of mishaps have denied Lamont of showing his true potential, however he’s taken a lot of confidence from his glimpses of form on the TC 250.
“It’s very frustrating. At round five it all went pear-shaped for me,” he added. “I hurt my shoulder/peck there. Then had a sickness at round six and round seven, I was back normal again, but I had a DNF, which killed my podium chances. I know I have the speed and ability to run at the top, just have to stay on the bike and stay healthy.”
After sitting out the Raymond Terrace round, Lamont sits eighth in the MX2 championship standings, a near unassailable 153 points from series leader Luke Clout.
