Australia's junior world champion on top of the podium in Greece.
Tasmanian Matthew Phillips picked up his first E3 victory in the 2014 FIM Maxxis Enduro World Championship GP of Greece in Kalambaka on Sunday.
On Saturday Phillips’ day was one of mixed fortunes. Setting the pace early on to lead, the KTM rider crashed on the second extreme test and eventually placed third behind series leader Ivan Cervantes (KTM) and Mathias Bellino (Husqvarna).
Sunday was brought to a thrilling close on day two as the 2013 Enduro Junior World Champion Phillips won his first event in the E3 category for KTM. He led from the opening special test of the day two to secure the victory from Cervantes and Bellino.
“Today was perfect, it couldn’t have gone any better,” Phillips beamed. “I pushed hard from the word go and led the whole day. It’s an awesome feeling to get my first senior win.”
Cervantes remains the E3 World Championship leader, 18 points ahead of Phillips, who’s a further 16 in front of Bellino.
In the E1 ranks it was Christophe Nambotin (KTM) who won on Saturday from Jeremy Tarroux (Sherco) and Anthony Boissiere (Sherco), however on Sunday Eero Remes delivered TM its first E1 victory from Nambotin and Cristobal Guerrero.
The E2 category was also a mixed bag in Greece with Pierre Alexandre Renet (Husqvarna) winning Saturday over Antoine Meo (KTM) and Alex Salvini (Honda), before Meo bounced back to win day two ahead of Renet and Johnny Aubert (Beta).
The 2014 Enduro World Championship will resume at Heinola in Finland on 7-8 June.
