HSE Motorex KTM Off-Road Team talent Ben Grabham is targeting the title of inaugural WA Tri-Series Champion when the final stanza of the series wraps up at Kumarina Station in the state’s Pilbara Region this weekend.
32-year-old Grabham dominated the opening two rounds held at Carnarvon and Port Hedland, and if he can repeat the feat at Newman, will collect a $20,000 prize purse for his efforts.
The Bathurst-based rider continues to make a remarkable comeback from the spinal injury he sustained in April last year, and feels he is getting stronger with each event contested.
“Another new venue I haven’t been to before,” said Grabham. “I only know what I’ve heard, and it’s good to be heading there all healthy and after a good run in the series so far. I’m looking forward to it.
“I’ve had a good last month of faster and slower riding including the four-day so it’s a matter of getting there and adjusting to what’s there.
“I like this way of doing it. Heading into a blind track you’ve gotta be switched on and ready for anything.”
The third leg of the WA Tri-Series begins tomorrow with a 10 kilometre prologue before 500 kilometres of competitive racing across Saturday and Sunday.
Grabham, who will ride the 2014 KTM 500 EXC, is hopeful of continuing his recent form and the overall re-building process.
“The biggest thing for me this weekend is to wrap up the series,” he said. “To win all three would be great but to be getting stronger and stronger each month and rebuilding on everything I lost last year is the most important thing.”
He will compete as part of the HSE Motorex KTM Off-Road Team’s three-prong attack which will feature his 19-year-old brother Broc, along with credentialed rider Matt Fish.
After two rounds, Grabham holds a 14-point lead over Adam Clay and Rod Faggotter. A further 25 points are up for grabs for the event winner this weekend.
