Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Matt Moss will enter the second half of the Monster Energy MX Nationals this weekend at Appin, unfazed by the injury woes of MX1 series leader Todd Waters.
Moss’ season has been highlighted by a string of podium results, including a breakthrough overall win at Broadford’s fourth round. He’s currently sitting second in the standings and 35 points behind Waters after five rounds.
A month-long trip to California during the mid-season layoff and an enhanced training program with Alteregoelite has Moss in good shape for the final five rounds, however he’s not putting too much emphasis on the injury of Waters at this point.
Waters, still recovering from a heavy knock to the head prior to the Broadford round, underwent surgery on a broken collarbone earlier this month that was sustained during a Queensland state title round (click here for more). He faces a final medical assessment this week before he’s confirmed for Appin.
“If you try and control someone else or control other people, it always comes back and bites you in the ass,” he told MotoOnline.com.au. “I’m not fussed, I don’t care what any of the other guys are doing.
“I’ve got a job, I’m out there by myself and we’re going to win races. I don’t care what all the other guys are doing as long as I’m trying to get that number on plate at the end of the day.
“[Waters’ injury is] unfortunate, but you know, that’s racing. Everyone’s gone through their bad luck and obviously he’s got some.”
With the series reigniting this weekend at Appin, Moss is focused on doing all he can to win his first MX1 title in his return season to the category.
“It’s really time to chase that championship and really go after it to try and get it,” Moss added. “I’m either going to win this championship or I’m definitely not going to go down without swinging. I can’t wait.”
