38,000 spectators packed into the Italian circuit of Maggiora where Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin took the MX1 overall win at round nine of the the 2013 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Paulin battled his way to a third MX1 Grand Prix victory with a hard-earned 2-1 moto scorecard. The Frenchman overcame the likes of Ken de Dycker, Clement Desalle and defending champion Antonio Cairoli along the way.

Second overall on the podium went to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s De Dycker. The Belgian rider used a consistent 2-3 moto scorecard to take his first podium finish since April 2012.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Cairoli had a rough day at his home round. The Italian crashed while leading moto one and tweaked his knee which he previously injured back in 2008.

Cairoli regrouped and finished moto one in fourth place before wrapping up the day with a strong second place in moto two for third overall in MX1.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Van Horebeek was fourth overall, his best result of the season. Max Nagl rounded out the top five aboard his Honda World Motocross ride.

Monster Energy MX Nationals regular Billy Mackenzie mad his return to the GP scene with Monster Energy Yamaha in MX1. Mackenzie finished 15th overall with 16-14 moto scores.

Cairoli continues to lead the MX1 standings with a 51-point lead over Paulin in second followed by Desalle in third.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings put together another impressive performance in Italy over the weekend, taking a 1-1 sweep in the MX2 class.

Herlings was followed by KTM Silver Action’s Jose Butron who lead half of the first moto before succumbing to Herlings’ raw speed. The Spanish rider used 2-5 moto scores to take the runner-up spot.

Taking third overall in the MX2 class was Alessandro Lupino, the CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy Pro Circuit rider used 6-2 moto scores to land himself on the podium.

Australia’s Dean Ferris was seventh overall in Italy on his Monster Energy Yamaha. Ferris used a pair of seventh place finishes to take away his top 10 finis for the event.

Herlings continues to lead the MX2 standings with a solid 124-point lead over Jordi Tixier followed by Butron in third. Ferris sits sixth overall after nine rounds of racing.

In the WMX class it was Monster Energy Yamaha’s Chiara Fontanesi who took yet another victory at her home round in Italy.

While Fontanesi dominated with a 1-1 performance, it looked as though Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge was in the prime position to show what she’s made of.

Unfortunately for the young Australian she couldn’t keep the bike on two wheels, crashing on the opening lap of moto two and handing over the lead to the defending champion Fontanesi.

With Fontanesi taking the overall win, it was HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane who took second overall with 2-3 finishes, followed by Rabbit Racing Kawasaki’s Stephanie Laier in third with a 3-4 moto score.

After her fall Rutledge managed to fight her way from outside the top 20 back to an outstanding ninth place allowing her to finish fourth overall with her 2-9 finishes.

Fontanesi continues to lead the WMX standings with Rutledge sitting 32 points back in second place followed by Kane in third.
