Australia’s Matt Phillips scored his second consecutive double victory during Portugal’s fourth round of the FIM Enduro World Championship at Torres Vedras over the weekend.
It was a near perfect weekend for the Monster Energy CH Racing team rider, winning six special tests on the opening day to claim a 33-second margin of victory. The EWC newcomer then went on to top the Enduro Junior class on day two.
On day one the young Australian stamped his authority on the class early on, quickly building a commanding lead he then maintained his position at the head of the class to claim a deserved win.
Day two saw Matt deliver another solid opening lap, from which he was able to keep ahead of his rivals before building a 15-second advantage and claiming his fifth win of the year.
In doing so Philips moves 17 points clear at the top of the EJ championship standings.
“I’m really happy with how the weekend has turned out,” Phillips said. “Getting another two wins has been great but more importantly I’ve been able to extend my lead in the championship.
“I think I’m starting to find my feet in this championship. I felt a lot more comfortable with my bike and the track this weekend than I have done all season.
“I was able to hit all my lines almost every time I rode the special tests and could see an improvement in my riding as the weekend progressed.
“I feel like everything is starting to come together now as we start the second half of the season so I’m hoping to keep building on this momentum at the next round in Romania.”
The E1 class was swept by KTM’s world champion Antoine Meo, while Alex Salvini was also perfect in E2. Likewise, Christophe Nambotin won both Saturday and Sunday’s E3 action.
Women’s contender Jessica Gardiner rode her Sherco to a first career EWC win on Saturday, before backing that result up with second on Sunday. Jemma Wilson rode to fourth on day one and sixth on the second for the weekend aboard her Honda.
Note: Gardiner was later denied victory by officials due to complications in the first special test. With the controversial test later included in the results despite originally being removed, Gardiner dropped to fourth in the overall order for day one.
