Defending 450SX champion, Ryan Villopoto, emerged victorious for the first time this season at Anaheim 2, the third round of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship.
The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was forced to pass a selection of title contenders to make the move into first position, and by lap six Villopoto had made the move on Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard and continued to log consistently fast lap times to win by nearly seven seconds over Canard.
Canard made this his second runner-up finish this season, while Davi Millsaps and TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed engaged in an intense battle for third. The two riders went back and forth, both riding aggressively and pushing the pace, with Reed’s form looking far improved over the passed two rounds.
A tip-over by Millsaps ultimately secured Reed his first podium result of the season, but the Rockstar Energy Racing rider still maintains possession of the points lead after finishing fourth overall.
Behind Villopoto, Canard and Reed was Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer in fifth, after taking the holeshot and early lead, Weimer faded back to round out the top five.
Millsaps leads the 450SX points standings by three points over Canard, while Reed follows closely in third, just seven points behind series’ leader Millsaps and four points behind second place Canard. Villopoto now moves into fourth place on the points ladder, 11 points off of the lead.
Australia’s Dan McCoy was unable to qualify for the 450SX main event at Anaheim 2, finishing up with a ninth place finish in the LCQ race. McCoy will return next week at Oakland’s round four to take another shot at that illusive main event spot.
In the 250SX class it was once again GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac who stole the show, clinching his third-straight main event win of the 2013 West Coast 250SX Monster Energy Supercross series.
Tomac kicked-off the main event with an average start, but quickly began making his way to the front of the back, where Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely was leading with Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen following closely behind.
Tomac moved in behind Roczen and the fast trio went on to build a significant gap between themselves and fourth place rider Zach Osborne, of the GEICO Honda team.
On lap eight, Roczen attempted to make a pass on Seely for the lead, but it allowed Tomac to take over the position and set his sights on the top spot. Just two laps later, Tomac made an impressive outside pass on Seely to move into the lead and carried it through to the finish for his 10th career win.
Roczen went on to make a pass on Seely for the runner-up spot, while Seely held on in third to round out the podium. Behind Seely was Osborne in fourth and MotoConcept’s Jake Canada with an impressive ride in fifth.
Tomac’s lead now stands at nine points over Roczen in the overall rankings, with Seely holding down third, 17 points out of the lead.
Australia’s Kade Mosig and Josh Cachia were unable to transfer into the main event at Anaheim 2, Mosig barely missed out with a third place LCQ finish, while Cachia took out fifth.
Monster Energy Supercross will continue next weekend on 26 January, at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California.
