CDR Yamaha’s Josh Coppins remains focused ahead of Coolum’s 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals season finale, keeping his eye on the prize as he wraps up an illustrious 17-year professional career.
Since announcing his plans of retirement at Appins round eight of the series, the Kiwi veteran says this has allowed the emotions to subside, which allows him to remain focused on the task at hand.
Currently leading the premier MX1 class by 14 points over Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Todd Waters, Coppins will maintain his usual game plan and treat the finale just like any other event.
“Because I announced my decision a while ago, the emotion of it all has subsided and it has allowed me to simply do what I always do,” said Coppins. “My plan for this weekend is the same as any other weekend, race to the best of my ability and enjoy what I do.”
“Regardless of the outcome, I have had a sensational career and something I’m proud of. As I mentioned in my retirement announcement, my only regret is that I didn’t return to Australia sooner as I have had an amazing two years racing here and the CDR Yamaha team have been the perfect fit for me.”
Coppins looks forward to a fresh future filled with new challenges after he hangs up his boots.
“I’m excited about the weekend and at the same time just as excited about what the future brings,” he added. “Come Sunday Night, it will be over and another new set of challenges will face me.
“But it would be nice to finish the job here with CDR Yamaha and give the team a championship they deserve.”
Although this will be Coppins’ final race on Australian soil, he will still represent New Zealand at the Motocross of Nations and also compete at selected events in Europe.
