Motorcycling Australia has revealed the Australian Team for the 2012 FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) to be held in Lommel, Belgium on 30 September.
CDR Yamaha’s Lawson Bopping will lead the Australian Team in Belgium, wearing the green and gold in the MX1 (450cc) class.
Bopping will be joined on the team by Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racing rider Luke Styke. The current Australian MX2 title contender, who was third in the 2011 Australian Supercross Lites, will take up the MX2 (250cc) berth.
Rounding out the star-studded Aussie-based team in the MX3 (Open) class will be Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Todd Waters, who is currently running second in the MX1 standings of the MX Nationals.
Queensland’s Ford Dale has been appointed as reserve for the MX1 and MX3 classes, and Victoria’s Josh Cachia as reserve for MX2.
As reported yesterday, Michael Byrne had originally been penciled in as the team’s MX1 threat, but suffered a broken leg at Unadilla last weekend in the US.
Last year at Motocross of Nations in France, Australia scored its first ever podium thanks to the efforts of Chad Reed, Brett Metcalfe and Matt Moss, however all three will sit out the event in 2012.
Reed continues to recover from injuries sustained during American Supercross, while Metcalfe suffered a broken leg while training for the outdoors in California. Moss is now over the age limit of the MX2 category and has sat out much of the AMA outdoor season through injury.
