With the recent departure of already crowned 2012 450 AMA SX champion, Ryan Villopoto, the door has been left open for the field to step up and battle for the win.
But as one departs, another arrives, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey is back. Taking a sixth last weekend in Seattle in his first race back, the former-champion says he is happy and will build on that result.
JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Davi Milsaps and Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Brayton will be riders to watch, as they battle for second place overall in the championship chase.
Also getting in the mix will be Andrew Short, coming off his first-ever 450 SX win in Seattle, Ken Roczen on the KTM 350 machine, who took an impressive second on debut at last weekend, and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s lone rider, Jake Weimer, who has been solid all year taking multiple podiums.
The West Coast Lites came back with a bang in last weekend, with GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson battling for the title.
The two riders pushed hard in the Seattle main event, with Wilson eventually being taken down by Tomac. The result, Tomac now leads the title chase by four-points over a now injured Wilson.
Wilson suffered a slight shoulder injury in the incident, which could change everything for the overall championship. If Wilson does line-up at Salt Lake City, some exciting racing will be expected between the two.
Behind the battle for first, TLD/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely holds down third overall and will be looking to capitalize on any mistakes made up-front. While in-form Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin will be right there along with Seattle winner Ryan Sipes, who is back and feeling fresh after a collarbone injury.
