MX Nationals boss Kevin Williams has told MotoOnline.com.au that his company, Williams Event Management, will not be promoting the Australian Supercross Championship in 2012.
Current Australian Motocross Championship promoter Williams Event Management has ruled out the possibility of adding Australian Supercross to its roster for 2012.
After Global Action Sports yesterday announced it has closed the doors on the mega-dollar Super X series after four years, Motorcycling Australia is seeking expressions of interest for potential promoters to host the series.
However MX Nationals boss Kevin Williams, who has been responsible for the spectacular rise of Australian Motocross Championship, won’t be in the running to promote the series, instead focusing on further boosting the outdoors.
“We worked very closely with Global Action Sports and every effort was made to make it work,” former Super X general manager and race director Williams said. “Unfortunately, the demographic and population here just doesn’t support supercross at that level.
“Over the last 15 years we’ve worked really hard to develop a platform for motocross, which has continued to grow every year. Over the last four years, we’ve been spending all of our time working, getting to the final round of motocross and then flat out into supercross, then back flat out into motocross.
“Our focus for the future is purely to continue to develop, build and grow the motocross championship for riders, sponsors and spectators alike. This year the championship is 10 rounds and, depending on what does or doesn’t happen with another supercross promoter, we would be looking to grow the outdoors to 12 rounds.
“That would put us on an equal footing to the number of events within the AMA series. With the rider line-up we have this year, the MX Nationals is certainly world class. Our 100 percent focus will be on that and we’ll spend our off-season developing sponsorship opportunities and further enhancing the series.”
This year’s 10-round MX Nationals series will commence at Conondale in Queensland on 1 April, with four-time Pro Open (MX1) champion Jay Marmont on track to defend his title against a host of world class internationals and rising Aussie stars.
