Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto is celebrating a clean-sweep of both Anaheim rounds in the 2012 AMA Supercross series. After a convincing win at Anaheim II, Villopoto is back in control.
It had been four weeks since Villopoto stood on the top spot of the podium and after four different winners he was the first to capture a second win of the series.
After a poor start in the heat race, Villopoto was able to put in a hard charge and eventually take a confidence boosting heat race win. In the main event, Villopoto rode a near flawless race, grabbing the holeshot and putting down a solid 20 laps, leading from start to finish to take the main event win.
“I pulled the holeshot and got passed on the inside going through the whoops, but was able to stay low off the triple and pass him back before the end of the first lap,” said Villopoto.
“Once out front, I was just trying to keep tabs on second place. I saw that the guys behind me were doing a faster rhythm, so on the next lap I was able to take that line and from there I was able to keep a consistent gap until the finish.”
Villopoto has reclaimed the points lead and will be carrying the red plate into the next round at San Deigo’s Qualcomm Stadium.
