South Australia’s Murraylands region will be the next area to host dual rounds of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC).

About two hundred riders – including the fastest in the country – and hundreds of crew and spectators will make the trek to Callington (located 25km’s southwest of Murray Bridge, towards Adelaide) for the event on June 27th and 28th.

Organisers Dirt Bike Promotions have been working with the South Australian Enduro Committee and property owner and are expecting a fantastic race for riders and spectators.

Property owner, Owen Rothe, who is a rider himself, said the track would be “loamy sand”.

“The two tracks are going to be great. There’s lots of creeks, you’ll be in and out of creek beds a lot,” Rothe said.

“It is more on the tight side, I rode the Australian 4-Day Enduro this year and it’s tighter than that.

“But it does flow and the soil is really good… it’ll be a great event.”

Dirt Bike Promotions’ Bruce Sargent said they had chosen the Callington venue for rounds five and six of the championship because of the property’s quality and to bring the championship closer to South Australian and western Victorian racers.

“It’s hard to have venues close to every rider in the country who’s interested in competing, but we do our best, and we really hope riders from this end of the country take the opportunity to race the AORC on June 27th and 28th,” Sargent said.

“AORC racing is heaps of fun and a great way to hone and expand your motocross skills or add a bit of competitive edge to your trail riding hobby… and it’s not just for the top guys, we have classes for everyone from clubman to women and juniors.

The 2009 AORC is a 10-round series held over five weekends.

Battle for this year’s championship has hit fever pitch after the first two weekends of racing, with Ballard’s Wellard Yamaha rider Stefan Merriman (from Nelson’s Bay, NSW) leading by three-points over teammate Jarrod Bewley (from Sydney).

Honda’s AJ Roberts (from Bribie Island, QLD) sits third, seven points off Merriman.

Rounds five and six of the AORC will be held at Murray Bridge/Callington (SA) on June 27th and 28th. Rounds seven and eight: QLD on August 15th and 16th and rounds nine and 10: Young (NSW) on September 12th and 13th.

The championships boasts classes for every level of rider, from Juniors older than 9-years to Clubman, Women, Veterans, Masters, Experts and championship-level racers.

The AORC are fantastic for spectators, with nail-biting action and the chance to get up close and personal with the stars of Australian enduro racing.
