Scotsman Billy Mackenzie says the whoops are the key to unleashing his full potential in supercross entering this weekend’s final round of Monster Energy Super X at Ipswich.
Mackenzie went 6-11-6 for ninth overall last weekend in Maitland for Monster Energy Kawasaki, and he’s content with the result as he continues to refine his supercross skills.
“I don’t fell as frustrated as I have the last few rounds,” Mackenzie said. “I’ve had an average day, but my riding has been a little better than the last few rounds.
“I felt more confident today, I felt I was flowing a lot better. I’m getting good starts and battling up front with the guys, I just need to sort my whoop sections out really.
“If I can get that down, I think I could be in with a shot for a podium at Ipswich.”
Team manager Troy Carroll admitted that the team never expected Mackenzie to win the title, not willing to add pressure on him with a round to go.
“I think Billy’s fitness was a little bit down and he didn’t have the speed tonight, but having said that it’s Billy’s first season in supercross,” Carroll said.
“We just have to keep working and moving forward and see what we can do. We didn’t expect him to come out and win the championship.”
