Serco Yoshimura Yamaha’s Kirk Gibbs suffered a broken collarbone while practicing for the upcoming Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, yesterday.
The current Pro Lites MX Nationals number two confirmed to MotoOnline.com.au this afternoon that he’s been injured, and is set to undergo surgery this week in a bid to be fit for round one in Melbourne on 22 October.
“I broke my collarbone, but it’s in line and they are going to plate it just to speed up the recovery,” Gibbs explained. “There’s a 90 percent chance I’ll go in on Friday for the operation.
“I was out practicing and it dried up, sort of got a little skatey. I got sideways and came up short on a double, so yeah, went over the front.
“I was feeling good the whole day, it was just one of those minor mistakes where you stuff something up and it costs you dearly.”
Despite his injury, Gibbs is confident that he’ll be on track for the season opener toward the end of next month, with doctors suggesting he’ll be able to ride in two weeks.
“I plan on riding before the first round, so I’ll probably leave it until the last couple of days before and go out,” Gibbs added. “If it’s all good then I’ll do it. They reckon I should have time for a week on the bike, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Gibbs sat out much of last season’s Super X series with a broken wrist, anxious to return for a solid season in 2011 if his health allows.
