World motocross will head to Thailand for the 2013 season.

World motocross will head to Thailand for the 2013 season.

The FIM Motocross World Championship will have a grand prix in Thailand in 2013, announced Youthstream president Giuseppe Luongo at last weekend’s Motocross of Nations.

Luongo signed a contract with the president of the Federation of Motor Sports Club of Thailand, Thongchai Wongsawan, who is supported by Jan Postema, to celebrate the FIM MX1/MX2 World Championship in Thailand from 2013 until 2015.

The grand prix is scheduled to be at the beginning of the season in order facilitate the journey to everybody and let people spend some days in Thailand.

Thongchai Wongsawan expressed his gratitude towards Youthstream and the FIM to have trusted Thailand to organize the FIM MX1/2 World Championships. Mr. Wongsawan is willing to start working in this new project and he will make sure it is ready for 2013.

Jan Postema, from the JP Motocross school has been working with Wongsawan for several years and looks forward to the event.

“Thailand is a very big country and this is a very good possibility for us all to make Motocross even more international,” he said. “People in Asia and especially in Thailand are very pleasant people and very motivated, so I am sure that we will have a great event there.”

FIM/CMS director Dr. Wolfgang Srb added that it’s part of the federation’s long-term goals to expand the series outside of Europe.

“This is part of our long term strategy in the FIM to go with the GP more outside Europe, especially to those regions which are growing really fast like Asia, so congratulations to all of those who have made this deal possible,” he said.

It’s also been announced that Teutschenthal will remain on the schedule until at least 2026, while Fermo will remain as the Italian GP for next season.
