Matthew Phillips has continued his dream start to the 2011 International Six Day Enduro, backing up his opening day placing of second in E2, with another podium finish on day two in Finland.
As the talented 18 year old motocross come enduro star has continued to prove his first day success was no fluke, it was a forgettable day for Aussie enduro legend Kirk Hutton, with the veteran falling heavily in the eighth and final event of the second day of competition.
Suffering from head and chest injuries Hutton was taken to hospital and kept overnight for observation. The extent of his injuries are still unknown and whether he will return to action is likely to be determined in the coming 24 hours.
Hutton’s fall saw the Australian team drop from third in the World Trophy standings to eighth, with Glenn Kearney also struggling in the challenging conditions.
KTM mounted E2 rider Toby Price is still looking strong, sitting eighth after day two, ahead of fellow Aussies Daniel Milner (12th), Mitch Harper (23rd) and Glenn Kearney (62nd).
The World Trophy team of Hutton, Kearney, Phillips, Milner, Price and E3 rider Geoff Braico (who currently sits 14th in the E3 class) now face an uphill battle if they wish to claw back to their podium standing by day six, but are more than ready to take on the challenge. Much of the team’s fate will be determined when news comes of whether or not Hutton is definitely out for the event.
For the Junior Trophy team, led by Mitch Harper (24th overall in E2), Mitchell Bowen (17th overall E3), Scott Keegan (21st overall E3) and Josh Ballard (53rd overall in E2), reducing the ten minute gap between them and third placed Great Britain will be their focus over the coming days.
In the Women’s Cup Australia sit fourth just a minute behind third-placed Sweden, with the trio of Jessica Gardner (6th overall), Jemma Wilson (7th) and Alison Parker (8th) looking to take the final podium position from the Europeans.
Among the other Aussies performing strongly in Finland, Nathan Castle has been a standout sitting ninth overall in the C2 class after consecutive top 15 finishes.
Castle is joined in the C2 class by Scott Cambell (24th overall) and Riccardo Braico (37th), while Steven Braico is the sole Aussie in the C3 class and currently holds the 37th overall position.
