Australia has gotten off to a great start at the 2011 Finland International Six Day Enduro, with all three teams sitting in the top five after the first day.

Both the premier World Trophy Team and Women’s cup team have rounded out day one in third position overall, while the Junior Trophy Team sits in fifth.

The World Trophy Team, consisting of Kirk Hutton, Daniel Milner, Matthew Phillips, Toby Price and Geoff Braico finished day one only seven minutes behind home team Finland, who currently lead the event over Spain.

A standout in the team has been Tasmanian Matthew Phillips. Relatively new to the enduro scene, the young former motocross gun finished the day with a special stage win, and only finished out of the top five in two of the eight special tests. Phillips rounded out the day in an impressive sixth outright after sitting as high as third.

Phillips’ outstanding performance was backed up by an eighth place outright from KTM’s Toby Price, while Glenn Kearney was also able to get himself inside the top 20 with 19th, cementing the team’s podium position for the day.

While we do not have many details of day two’s results at this stage, it is known that Kirk Hutton suffered a large crash, resulting in an overnight hospital stay after injuries to his chest and head.

Stay tuned for a day two ISDE update as more results and information on both Kirk and the Australian team’s progress become available.
