CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Josh Coppins heads into this weekend’s final round of the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals with an 18 point lead in the series, but has acknowledged that he still must come out with all guns blazing if he is to seal the Pro Open championship.
After an impressive outing at Moree’s penultimate round that saw him tie on points with team mate Jay Marmont, Coppins won the round on countback of his higher final moto finish.
More importantly though, the Kiwi jumped from second to first in the series points after an unfortunate injury DNF for previous points leader, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Dean Ferris.
Despite the points buffer coming into the final round at Coolum, Coppins knows he cannot rest on his laurels.
“I’m pretty happy and satisfied with the day,” Coppins mentioned at Moree.
“It’s been a great day for the team, a great day for Yamaha and all our sponsors and the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people. But, it’s not over yet so its straight back to work tomorrow as this championship is far from over.”
Coppins will not only be battling with Marmont this weekend, but also Ferris, who will be pulling out all stops despite a hand injury to pull back the 40 point deficit to Coppins after Moree.
Coppins and the CDR Rockstar Yamaha team will spend the week preparing in Queensland before the championship decider this weekend at Coolum.
