Mackenzie confirms Motocross Grand Prix return at Matterley Basin

Scotsman Billy Mackenzie will contest the British round of World Motocross in September.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Billy Mackenzie has confirmed that he’ll contest the British round of the MX1 Motocross World Championship in August.

The Scotsman has competed in Australia since the beginning of last season and finished second in the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals last season, however he’s now on track for a World Motocross return to round out this year at Matterley Basin.

Mackenzie confirmed that he’ll also contest a round of the British Motocross Championship in a revealing interview with MXlarge, hoping to gain himself a position on the Motocross of Nations team.

“I have been sent an email from the ACU about being shortlisted for the nations, so there’s that possibility if I show some form at home,” Mackenzie explained.

“I want to come home for as long as possible, been over here a while now and need to catch up with friends and family while I’m back. So will probably stay until after the nations then I need to head back for Super X.”

While Mackenzie isn’t ruling out a full time return to the GPs, he admitted that he’s enjoying his time in Australia and would be content to continue his career here with Kawasaki.

“I have a really good thing going on over here with Monster Kawasaki,” he added. “I love the team, lifestyle and really enjoy Supercross, so unless something happens while I’m home then I’m pretty sure I’ll be staying here.

“If I can get a good result at the GP and show people I’m capable of still running near the front then I’d like to look at options to returning to the GP’s and giving it my best shot.”

Mackenzie says he’s looking for a pair of top 10 results, eyeing a finish in the top six if things go his way on race day.

“Well from speaking to Josh [Coppins] and knowing how I ride during the week, I’d really like to run around the sixth place mark,” Mackenzie added. “But I will be happy with two top 10s seeing as I haven’t raced the GP’s for a couple years now.

“It’s hard to just jump in to these races but I’m going to try my best. Hopefully the British fans will help me along! I have been doing my training in preparation for the GP and I’m feeling good on the bike, so I’m just going to come and enjoy racing rather than putting pressure on myself to get the results I want.”
