Suzuki’s Cody Cooper has wrapped up the Demon Energy New Zealand Motocross Championship with the MX1 victory at New Plymouth’s season finale on Sunday.
After finishing two points short one year ago, Cooper won one of the hardest fought seasons yet ahead of Yamaha GP veteran Josh Coppins, who was ruled out after race one on Sunday with an ankle injury.
Coppins remained second in the title chase, while Honda’s Michael Phillips rounded out the overall podium.
The MX2 class saw former world title contender Darryl King (Yamaha) wrap up the title by a slim four-point margin over Australian Suzuki rider Daniel McCoy.
Riding a YZ250 two-stroke, King finished with 1-4-1 results on the weekend, while McCoy scored 3-2-3 results after leading the title into the finale.
McCoy’s countryman, Honda’s Cody Mackie, took third spot overall in the championship.
