Team Suzuki newcomer Brodie Waters has won on debut with the team in the first national Supersport race of the weekend at Phillip Island.

Waters won first up in his maiden ride on the factory GSX-R600, slicing his way through to the front of the opening 12-lap affair to commence the weekend.

The victory adds to Waters’ impressive start to 2011, earlier claiming Superpole in the category’s first one-lap qualifying hit out.

Behind Waters came the Yamaha Racing Team veteran Kevin Curtain just over a tenth in arrears, hounded by Carr Brothers Motorsports’ Mitchell Carr and the in-form Aaron Gobert (CycleOnline.com.au/Gobert Motorsports Yamaha).

The four of them were less than half a second apart at the race’s duration after an entertaining affair.

Curtain’s teammate Rick Olson was in the mix for the first half until he suddenly dropped off the pace toward the end, while Nick Waters (Waters Racing/Sunstate Racing Suzuki) stopped early in the race with a technical problem.

The second Supersport race of the weekend will take place tomorrow morning at 10:10am.

Earlier today, Wayne Maxwell secured Superpole for Team Honda Racing. Stay tuned for a full rundown.

The opening Superstock bout of the weekend was won by Mike Jones on his Reece Bancell Scholarship-supported Yamaha, continuing his scintillating form to start season 2011.

Superstock race two of the weekend is set to be contested this afternoon at 5:00pm.
