Specialist motorbike insurance provider InsureMyRide has launched a campaign to introduce a dirt bike Recreational Registration Scheme in NSW, and they’re asking for support from the motorcycle fraternity to help make it happen.

InsureMyRide business development manager Luke Smith said that off road dirt bike riders in NSW were unfairly burdened with higher registration costs than their intersate counterparts.

“New South Wale riders needs a lower cost registration option allowing off-road bikes to be used in certain areas like our Victorian cousins,” Smith said.

InsureMyRide has been agitating to have this issue brought before the New South Wales Parliament.

“We have been seeking support from Members of Parliament to sponsor a petition on behalf of off-road motor bike riders in New South Wales,” Smith continued.

“It appears that we secured this support. We now need to get a formal petition ready and that petition needs to have more than 500 signatures in support of Recreational Registration in New South Wales.

“This isn’t just about possibly saving a couple of hundred bucks on rego, it’s about a fairer and ultimately safer system that helps to ensure that dirt-bike owners don’t see full registration as barrier to riding off-road.”

That’s why the InsureMyRide petition argues this additional option would make registration more affordable and fair for those who only ride off-road, improve safety by requiring all off motorcycles to be inspected as part of the rego process and make it simpler to enforce by NSW Police.

“Our petition needs least of 500 signatures before we can formally submit it to New South Wales Parliament so they can consider it,” Smith explained.

All petitions need to be returned to InsureMyRide at Unit B, 12 Frederick Street, St Leonards, NSW 2065, by 30 January, 2011.

“Unfortunately petitions to the NSW Government can only be lodged through snail mail but we will keep riders updated on our progress on the InsureMyRide website,” Smith said.

“The Victorian Recreational Registration Scheme was put in place decades ago – we believe it’s time New South Wales caught up.”
