Scotsman Billy Mackenzie admits the he even surprised himself by finishing second on debut in the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, last Saturday night in Sydney.

The 2010 MX Nationals runner-up had been ruled out of the opening five rounds of Super X with a broken collarbone, however on debut he stunned with lightning starts and good speed to capture second overall, tied on points with round winner Jake Moss.

“I’m actually a little bit nervous now because I have to do it all again next week,” Mackenzie admitted. “It kind of feels like maybe I fluked it tonight but I know I didn’t because I rode really well.

“The practice I’ve had leading up to this event hasn’t been the greatest so I was just happy to get on a nice smooth track that was well prepared and suited my riding style.”

Mackenzie credited Kawasaki Racing Team manager Troy Carroll for the result on Saturday night, although it was a bittersweet moment in tying for first and being scored second on a countback.

“Troy helped me get the Kawasaki set up good during the week and I think that really helped a lot tonight,” former MXGP winner Mackenzie added. “My fitness was there and I came away tied for 1st. I really thought I had it, but that happens.”

Carroll was proud of Mackenzie’s achievement, amazed at his feat on debut.

“I’m completely amazed at what Billy’s achieved tonight,” the Queenslander said. “It was something special to see. This was his first Super X event and the team couldn’t be happier with the way he rode tonight. I’m just really looking forward to next weekend.”

The Super X season finale will take place this weekend at Brisbane’s QSAC Stadium on Saturday night.
