Factory Yamaha World Superbike star Marco Melandri is a surprise guest at tonight’s Sydney round of the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship.
The former MotoGP World Championship runner-up and 250GP World Champion was spotted chatting with CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha’s Jay Marmont after qualfying and says he’s impressed with what he’s seen so far at Super X.
“We are here for the Phillip Island test next week, so I came to watch the Yamaha team here in Super X,” Melandri told MotoOnline.com.au from the CDR pit.
“I have seen many races on the internet and TV back home in Italy and I am a big fan of Supercross. I have seen one American Supercross live, and for sure it seems Super X in Australia is the second largest Supercross series in the world.”
Melandri has ridden a lot of Motocross in his career for training, recently winning a charity race amongst fellow road racers and top Supermoto riders at Mantova in Italy.
“I ride for fun myself, we actually did a charity race two weeks ago in Italy and I won, so that was good fun,” he commented.
Melandri and the Yamaha World Superbike team will test at Phillip Island in Victoria on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday next week.
