Aussie Chad Reed made a solid debut with TeamVodafone in qualifying at Newcastle this afternoon.

TeamVodafone’s Chad Reed has topped the qualifying sheets for tonight’s opening round of the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, at Newcastle in New South Wales.

The twice defending Super X Champion set a best lap of 37.726 to edge out American AMA number five Justin Brayton (JGR Yamaha) in qualifying, with Brayton posting a 38.152.

Behind Brayton came fellow American Josh Hansen, the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider settling quickly into his KX450F after an unsettled practice session earlier in the day.

Three more AMA regulars made up positions four through six, with Jake Moss (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), Mike Alessi (JDR Motorex KTM) and Dan Reardon (Cougar Bourbon Honda Racing) posting the next best times on a dry and dusty hard-pack track that got real slick after practice.

Three-time MX Nationals Pro Open Champion Jay Marmont was next best and first of the Aussie regulars in seventh, with an impressive Craig Anderson (Honda) eighth, Dan McCoy (Hart and Huntington Coastal KTM) ninth and Tye Simmonds (JDR Motorex KTM) rounding out the top 10.

In the Lites qualifying it was American PJ Larsen who set the pace with a 39.514, followed by Matt Moss (Rockstar Motul Suzuki), Ryan Marmont (JDR Motorex KTM) and Serco Yamaha teammates Ford Dale and Kirk Gibbs. American-based British rider Steven Clarke was sixth.
