Scotsman Billy Mackenzie says he'll be back to battle Marmont for the Pro Open crown in 2011.

Renowned international racer Billy Mackenzie says he’s looking to go one better in next year’s Pro Open MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championship after taking second overall behind three-time champion Jay Marmont as a series rookie in 2010.

The Kawasaki Racing Team rider from Scotland proved the pace-setter for much of the season and finished up the Coolum season finale with a superb double victory, however a broken wrist in Canberra derailed his title prospects – falling 13 points short of Marmont at season’s end.

“I’m obviously disappointed not to win,” Mackenzie explained. “I got ill at Moree and couldn’t do much about that. I just had to do the best I could at Coolum.

“I rode the best I have all year at Coolum. I felt in control, the bike was perfect and I was coming up with the results under pressure.

“Unfortunately it was just a little bit too late but that’s the way it goes. I’m glad to finish the series on such a high and I’m looking forward to putting it right next year.”

KRT team manager Troy Carrol, himself a mutiple-time Australian champion, is happy with the team’s debut season as the factory-backed effort.

“All in all it was a great season for KRT,” Carroll commented. “Billy had a great debut season with KRT. He missed out on three motos and still only lost the championship by 13 points.

“He was undoubtedly the fastest guy in the country this year but we still take our hats off to Jay Marmont for his championship win.”

Mackenzie will now join teammates Cody Mackie and Luke Arbon in the Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, commencing in October at Energy Australia Stadium in Newcastle, New South Wales.
