Defending dual Pro Open Australian Motocross Champion Jay Marmont is on track to claim a third straight title when the series wraps up this weekend on 24-25 July at Coolum in Queensland.

The CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha rider holds a 40-point lead heading into the double-header round that will mark the season finale, the Wollongong local capturing his first overall victory of the season at Moree in Northern New South Wales last Sunday.

Marmont finished the weekend with 3-3-1-1 results at Moree, extending his lead from 16 to 40 points in the series ahead of rookie Dean Ferris and former world championship grand prix round winner Billy Mackenzie.

“It was good to get the monkey off my back, I’ve been gunning for it this year but things just haven’t been going my way when it comes to overall results,” the 27-year-old commented. “I went back to my old way of doing things and trained hard off the bike and really punished myself.

“I’m really fit at the moment and am definitely a lot more positive, which has taught me not to give up on race day. Last weekend was the best I’ve felt on a motocross track since Coolum last year so hopefully I can keep that form this weekend.”

Heading into this weekend’s Coolum round, Marmont remains focussed on the job at hand as the series will feature a mega six-moto format held over two days to round out the 2010 season.

“There are two races on Saturday and then four races on Sunday, so I want to try and at least win on Saturday and then carry that momentum into Sunday,” he continued. “It’s racing and anything can happen, so I’m not going to say I’ve won the championship yet – I still need to go out there and get the job done.”

Winning a third straight title would match the record of team boss Craig Dack, with Marmont acknowledging what it would mean to him to capture this year’s crown after an epic season of competition.

“In this day and age to win three championships in a row outdoors in Australia is a big feat,” he said, “We have world class guys like Billy Mackenzie out here now, as well as a lot of young guys who are stepping it up. Hopefully we’ll keep that number one plate come Sunday afternoon.”
