ASBK: Staring claims first Superbike win in QLD opener

Cougar Bourbon Honda Racing’s Bryan Staring has claimed his maiden Australian Superbike Championship victory in race one at Queensland Raceway, using Dunlop’s older control tyre to his advantage over the 16-lap affair.

Staring was the lone rider in the Superbike field to contest the race with the 190 size Dunlop rear tyre, the remainder of the field opting to use the latest 200 size tyre that was introduced for this round.

The reigning Supersport champion raced to a 2.276-second victory over defending Superbike champion Josh Waters, the Team Suzuki rider chasing hard but ultimately falling short at the race’s end. Point leader Wayne Maxwell finished third on his Demolition Plus GAS Honda Racing CBR1000RR.

Waters’ teammate Shawn Giles rode a solid race to fourth after beating out satellite Suzuki rider Robbie Bugden.

Top Superstock 1000 A and B finisher was Craig Coxhell, riding his CJC Racing BMW S 1000 RR to a remarkable sixth overall. Behind Coxhell was Racer’s Edge Suzuki’s Scott Charlton and Glenn Allerton, the Valvoline Superbike Team rider having shock issues during the race.

Jamie Stauffer was an early casualty, his Ducati Motologic 1198R experiencing technical difficulties after he worked his way up to fourth.

Other riders to experience technical issues for the race included Ducati privateer Craig McMartin, as well as Superstock 1000 A and B contender Ben Attard.

Race two is scheduled for 3:25pm, with Supersport race two up shortly at 2:35pm.
