'We're going to strap it up and try ride tomorrow'.
An attempt to complete practice at the AUSX Open will determine whether current Australian SX1 number one Dean Wilson will be fit to try and defend his championship at Marvel Stadium tomorrow night.
Wilson enters round five of the Fox Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) just eight points outside of Quad Lock Honda Racing teammate Joey Savatgy, with the title going down to the wire this weekend.
A dislocated shoulder and torn labrum following contact from Vince Friese in last Sunday’s World Supercross Championship (WSX) double-header in Perth has jeopardised Wilson’s prospects, however, and there is the chance that he will be forced to undergo immediate surgery and likely cancel his international schedule that’s been planned into 2025.
“We’re going to strap it up and try ride tomorrow,” Wilson explained. “It could either be one of those things that I feel better than expected and I can race, or it’s not going to feel great and I’ll probably just pack it up, go get surgery. It’s one of those situations, not ideal, but we’ll give it a go and I’ll give it my best. Those are just the cards that I’ve been dealt with.”
Wilson has been exceptional since arriving in Australia last season, picking up from where now-retired five-time AUSX premier class champion Justin Brayton left off by delivering Yarrive Konsky’s factory Honda organisation a sixth-consecutive crown. Only Luke Clout (Empire Kawasaki) mathematically remains in contention entering Melbourne, 17 points outside of Savatgy.
