AUSX championship leader heads another Honda Racing-dominated podium.
Honda Racing’s Shane McElrath took another step towards claiming the SX2 title after winning three of the four sprint races at Adelaide’s penultimate round of the Fox Australian Supercross Championship.
Polyflor Honda’s McElrath led another Honda Racing podium sweep at the Boost Mobile Supercross Sprint, as team-mates Brodie Connolly and Alex Larwood finished the night second and third respectively.
Polyflor Honda Racing’s Connolly claimed the first of the four six-lap finals, after making a statement pass on holeshot winner Kayden Minear (KTM Racing Team) early in the race.
The Kiwi finished 5.2s ahead of Larwood (Froth Honda Racing), with Empire Kawasaki’s Reid Taylor coming home third.
McElrath and team-mate Cole Thompson came together in the closing laps and both went down while fighting for a podium spot. After they remounted, a frustrated McElrath crossed the line in P4 and Thompson P5.
The second final came down to mere milimetres as McElrath took a last-gasp win with a do-or-die pass on Connolly in the final turn.
At the finish-line, the American claimed the win by just 0.06s after piling the pressure on leader Connolly for several laps, with holeshot winner Thompson taking third.
Behind the intense Honda Racing trio battling up front, Taylor got the better of hometown racer Larwood midway through the race to take third.
It was a much easier job for the championship-leading McElrath to take the third final, as he quickly dispatched of holeshot winner Larwood, then checked out.
Again, it was a Honda 1-2-3, with McElrath taking a 4.4s lead over Connolly, with Larwood third. Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Kaleb Barham finished fourth, and Minear fifth.
Thompson had an eventful race, coming second-best on an aggressive pass by Minear, then crashing again shortly after. He finished the race in P14.
McElrath ended his night with another win, finding his way past holeshot winner Thompson early, then controlling the sprint race to the chequered flag.
The Canadian Honda rider pushed hard for the entire final to finish just 0.9s behind McElrath, with Connolly third.
Minear continued to improve as the evening progressed to finish P4 and Taylor fifth.
As McElrath took the round win from Connolly and Larwood, Thompson claimed fourth and Minear P5.
Taylor, Barham, Liam Atkinson (Triumph), Mackenzie O’Bree (GasGas) and Thynan Kean (KTM) finished the evening in the remaining top 10 positions.
Heading into the final round at Melbourne in two week’s time, McElrath (88 points) holds a comfortable 10-point lead over Connolly (78), with Thompson third on 74.
