Cannon siblings take out MX3 and MXW victories in Queensland.
Honda Racing’s Brodie Connolly has inched closer to the MX2 title after winning Toowoomba’s sixth round of the 2024 Penrite ProMX Championship, his points lead now at 54 with just two rounds to go.
Moto one saw Brock Flynn (Husqvarna) rocket to yet another holeshot before leading the field throughout the opening turns, however it was hometown favourite Kaleb Barham (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) who swiftly snatched the lead.
Championship leader Connolly made a number of quick passes on the opening laps, and wasted no time passing Barham a lap later to take control of the race. It looked set to be another runaway performance from Connolly that we’ve seen on many occasions this year, although Barham had other ideas.
The Toowoomba local latched back onto Connolly before making a pass for the lead stick on lap five. He fended off a charge from the red-plate holder to eventually claim an emotional victory.
Jayce Cosford (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) was third behind Connolly, followed by pole sitter Reid Taylor (Empire Kawasaki) and Cambell Williams (MotoGo Yamaha). The top 10 was rounded out by Kayden Minear (KTM Racing Team), Alex Larwood (Honda Racing), Noah Ferguson (Honda Racing), Rhys Budd (Raceline Husqvarna Tdub Racing), and Jack Mather (Raceline Husqvarna Tdub Racing).
Race two proved to be a fairly uneventful affair as Connolly claimed the holeshot and quickly distanced himself from the field, while race one winner Barham crashed on the opening lap to diminish his hopes of an overall victory.
Connolly eventually stormed home to a convincing win ahead of Taylor and Cosford, the top five rounded out by Larwood and Ryder Kingsford (Yamalube Yamaha Racing). Positions sixth through to 10th were taken out by Minear, Barham, Williams, Budd, and Mather. Overall it was Connolly who stood atop the podium to extend his points advantage to 54, joined on the box by Taylor and Cosford.
In the MX3 category, Honda Racing’s Jake Cannon emerged with the overall win after registering a 1-3 scorecard, while race two winner Kobe Drew (WBR Yamaha) and Seth Burchell (WBR Yamaha) were second and third respectively. Cannon has now moved to within just seven points of championship leader Kobe Hantis (WBR Yamaha).
Reigning MXW champion Charli Cannon (Honda Racing) continued her dominance as she strung together 1-1 results to secure victory, while the podium was completed by Taylah McCutcheon (Empire Kawasaki) and Madi Simpson (Honda).
The ProMX championship will return to Queensland on 11 August at MX Farm, marking the penultimate round of the championship.
