Oz MX: Ferris and Styke win wet Sunshine State opener

Honda rider Dean Ferris pulled off another formidable season lead-up win at last weekend’s first round of the Sunshine State Motocross series at Coolum.

Ferris, who was supported trackside by multiple Motocross and Supercross champion Glen Bell, won the first Pro Open moto from Todd Waters, as well as the round overall after the event was cut short due to inclement weather.

Ferris fronted for the Queensland event fresh off his Deep Well Desert Race win in Alice Springs and says his fitness has never been better.

“I pulled the holeshot and put down one good lap and when I came around to see +5 seconds on my pit board, I decided to back it down. Still I managed to win by 15 seconds over Todd Waters so it was a really good race for me,” said Ferris.

“My CRF450 worked really well in the rough conditions, and everything is going to plan. I am fortunate to have a good team off people around me and I’m well on track for the first round of the national Motocross series.”

Yamalube/GYTR/Rockstar Yamaha’s Luke Styke continued on with his impressive 2009 form taking the win in the Pro Lites class, leading from start to finish yet had to withstand a mid-race charge from team mate Harley Quinlan. Styke stayed composed in the muddy conditions and finished the better of the pair and together they made it a team 1-2 in moto one with only a few seconds separating them.

Moto two lined up in the driving rain and again it was the Yamaha guys out front, but the order reversed with Quinlan leading Styke in the early stages and Beaton caught up in an early pile up.

Officials then threw the red flag and the racing was stopped. The results were declared on moto one positions.

The 2010 Australian MX Nationals starts next month at Horsham in Victoria on 28 March.
