Finished 12th overall on the night despite SX2 race three DNF.
GasGas Racing Team’s Noah Ferguson is awaiting further details on a knee injury sustained during a heavy fall in the final SX2 encounter at Newcastle.
The 20-year-old’s season is in jeopardy after crashing in the third final of the Triple Crown, understood to have popped out his knee in the incident, but is awaiting further scans this week to determine the extent of any damage.
Ferguson charged to the 10th fastest qualifying time at McDonald Jones Stadium, and was fifth in heat race number one, ahead of the three main events.
The MC 250F rider went 6-7 across the opening two finals on the night, but the race three incident ultimately forced Ferguson to retire from the outing, concluding the second round of the 2023 Fox Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) season in 12th overall.
“I was looking forward to Newcastle, it’s always a good vibe there with the crowd and it’s just a good stadium to race in,” recalled Ferguson. “Initially, I was struggling a little with the track, just trying to get a feel for the dirt, which was really slippery.
“In the races I got some decent starts and was consistent enough, but I was making some silly little mistakes. I was floating around that top-five overall heading into the final race, but unfortunately, a few guys were bunched up at the end of one of the rhythm sections on the opening lap and I was already committed, so I ran straight into them.
“When I hit the ground, my knee went one way and my leg went the other – it looks like my knee popped out. We’re still not 100 percent sure about the actual outcome of the injury, I’m still working on trying to get MRIs and scans, so I can work out what I need to do to get on the mend.”
With the third and final round of the AUSX championship taking place at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, in just 10 days time, the injury spells doubt on the remainder of Ferguson’s 2023 campaign. He has been linked to Honda Racing for the 2024 season onboard a CRF250R.
