Former 500cc Grand Prix race winner and recently axed Triumph World Supersport racer Garry McCoy is all but confirmed to make a shock MotoGP comeback in 2010.
The Australian, who had thought he would be entering his third straight year with Triumph in the Supersport World Championship this season, will instead return to motorcycling’s premier class on the FB Corse team according to sources from within the McCoy camp.
American John Hopkins had been pencilled in to ride the three-cylinder FB Corse machine in selected races during 2010, however recently announced that he would be returning to the AMA Superbike with Team M4 Suzuki.
Its expected that McCoy will sign with the team in Italy this weekend, confirming his return to MotoGP to become the second Australian on the MotoGP grid for this year alongside 2008 world champion Casey Stoner.
McCoy, who enjoyed the majority of his grand prix success with Red Bull Yamaha in 2000 and 2001, last made a grand prix campaign with the now defunct Ilmor team back at the final two grands prix events of 2006 at Estoril and Valencia.
In a surprising turn of events, speculation is also mounting that Triumph had re-offered McCoy a seat on a factory-backed 675 Daytona with the BE1 Racing team this week, the veteran turning down the offer in order to make a grand prix comeback.
