GasGas racer now holds a three-point advantage in the 2023 standings.
The moto two win of Byron Dennis at Wodonga has been reinstated following an appeal process and the GasGas-supported rider now holds the MX3 red plate ahead of the fourth round of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship at Maitland.
Dennis jumped out to a strong start in the muddy MX3 moto two at Wodonga, rounding the first turn in P2, but a mistake heading into the second turn saw the number 23 ride into the infield, missing multiple track markers in the process.
The 16-year-old was quick to raise his hand in the air to indicate that he’d recognised the situation, before entering the track and sliding back down to P3. Dennis crossed the line at the end of lap one in the lead, but a crash on lap two would see him drop back to fourth place.
Despite the crash, he was ultimately able to recover and take P1 by the time the chequered flag flew, but was initially docked two positions for course-cutting on the opening lap, before a successful appeal was made and the penalty was since removed by Motorcycling Australia (MA).
“I’m just stoked with the outcome because I felt like from the start I did the right thing,” Dennis told MotoOnline. “I want to set a good example too, like if I felt like I’d done the wrong thing I wouldn’t have appealed it and tried to make it right.
“MA did a great job handling this too, they looked at everything that we submitted and they were really open to hearing my side. I’m really looking forward to Maitland now, I’ve got the points lead and the red plate, so I’m really excited about that. It should be a great two days.”
With the additional points reinstated, Dennis now sits atop the MX3 standings, three points clear of Raceline Berry Sweet Husqvarna Racing’s Jack Mather as the series heads to Maitland, NSW, for round four on 6-7 May, where the MX3 category will compete in three motos.
