Consistency was key for Serco Yamaha import Cole Thompson at Wagga Wagga who ended his maiden Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) campaign with an SX2 round win.

The Canadian effectively filled in for injured team regular Jesse Dobson in this year’s domestic supercross, immediately making an impression with a P2 finish at Marvel Stadium’s season opener.

Seventh in Adelaide a week later followed by fourth overall in Newcastle saw the number six enter the final round second in the points, notching 3-2 finishes at Wagga Wagga to land his first Australian Supercross overall win and secure the runner-up position in the SX2 standings.

“The track conditions were tricky, especially when the sun was just setting,” Thompson explained. “I found it better in the second one than the first one, but both motos had their challenges, the track broke down and had some soft spots, it had some hard spots, it was slick, it was rutted.

“I thought the track was challenging, just in general, then you had a few light issues, so all in all, we all had to race the same track and I was able to adapt and so were the guys around me I think just fine. It was a good last event, big track, big rhythms and luckily we were able to come out with the overall.”

At the conclusion of the four rounds, Thompson ultimately finished 16 points shy of SX2 champion Max Anstie (Honda Racing), as Nathan Crawford (KTM Racing Team) completed the top three.
