Motivated Queenslander stronger and fitter than ever before.
An ironman effort from Todd Waters saw the Husqvarna rider secure third overall in Mackay’s round two of Penrite ProMX, after achieving podium finishes in rounds three and four of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) Friday and Saturday prior.
Waters started moto one on Sunday outside the top five, but methodically worked his way up to third position, where he finished the race.
The closing stages of race two saw the number 47 deliver a spirited charge, passing Brett Metcalfe and Aaron Tanti to finish just 0.8s shy of Kirk Gibbs who took the final spot on the podium, fourth in the second moto enough to secure Waters a rostrum finish for the round.
“I came into this weekend a bit nervous that it could cost me a lot of points, but today’s performance is definitely something I’m proud of,” Waters explained. “I didn’t get the best starts, but I was able to dig deep and work through the fields in both motos. My legs gave out on me at the end of the first race, but I had a good massage, then ensured I stayed hydrated for the second moto.
“I thought I had a lap or two more in that race than we actually did, so I was a bit disappointed I didn’t put on my late charge sooner, but I was so stoked to get on the box today! I feel stronger and fitter than I ever have and this result has given me a lot of confidence heading into Wodonga.”
In what was a strong three days in Mackay for Waters, he also secured a second and a third in E2 in rounds three and four of AORC.
The 2019 Australian MX1 champion currently sits third in the 2022 ProMX standings, just nine points from red plate-holder Kyle Webster entering round three at Wodonga, Victoria on 1 May. Notably, Waters will not have to do AORC double duties across that weekend, with the next round of the 2022 Australian Off-Road Championship taking place on 16 July at Kyogle, NSW.
