Kawasaki-mounted rider perseveres to score valuable MX2 points.
In what was an eventful MXGP of Latvia for Wilson Todd, an undisclosed medical condition in the first moto limited his overall result while he was still able to score valuable MX2 points.
A mistake in qualifying left Todd with 18th gate pick, however, determined to make the most of the situation he made a decent start in the opening moto.
Unfortunately disaster shortly followed for the Australian, where he was left 10 seconds behind the field after sudden braking caused him to stall.
The 23-year-old then continued to finish the race in 19th, suffering dizziness throughout the moto with a cause that is yet to be revealed.
Moto two was stronger for the Bike It MTX Kawasaki rider, recovering from a difficult start to finish P12, which left him 15th overall for the round and 14th in the MX2 championship standings.
“A really tough first moto at the weekend, I was suffering from a medical issue but didn’t want to pull off since I was still in the points, after coming through from last,” Todd explained.
“I felt better in the second race, but I had a bad gate pick and it’s a tough first corner at Kegums, so had to move through the pack to 12th.”
Team manager Steve Dixon could see in Todd’s body language during the opening moto that he was suffering, and was pleased with his determination to finish the race.
“Race one looked okay as he came round the first corner just outside the top ten, unfortunately on the second corner Wilson locked up the brakes and accidentally stalled, leaving him about 10 seconds from the back,” Dixon stated.
“As he caught up his body language looked awful, not knowing if it was him or the bike we spoke after the race and found out that he had an issue causing some dizziness. I was pleased with his resilience in the first race.”
“We now have a short break where we will work on development, working closely with Wilson and Courtney [Duncan] before the doubleheader in Turkey.”
Following a short break, the next round of the MXGP World Championship will take place at Afyonkarahisar, Turkey on 5 September, which marks the first of two rounds taking place at the Turkish venue in that week.
