Former Australian motocross champion Kirk Gibbs has declared he’ll still be available to race the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) on 7 October at Redbud in America despite suffering multiple injuries at the weekend’s Pirelli MX Nationals double-header hosted by Ranch MX.

Gibbs, who represented Team Australia in 2017 for the first time placing sixth overall in the Open category, has already ruled himself out of the remaining two rounds of the MX Nationals with fractures to his finger, shoulder and ribs, although he’s anticipating to be on the bike at least two months prior to the prestigious event.

“If the injury puts me out for four to six weeks, it will put me around Coolum or just after to start riding,” Gibbs explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “The injuries that I have aren’t major, so I can still sit on a pushbike and spin out. I’ll have nearly two months back on the bike [before MXoN], which after four to six weeks off it isn’t too bad.

“I’m still going to put my hand up, but in saying that, it’s completely up the committee and what they want to do. If they want to pick off results from right now, then that’s totally understandable. If I can, I know I’ll be ready.”

The South Australian-native is signed to a motocross-only contract with the KTM Motocross Racing Team, making him one of the few domestic-based riders available for selection at the MXoN, which is set to clash with round two of the Australian Supercross Championship in Coolum, Queensland.
