Desalle breaks through for season-first victory at MXGP of Russia
Defending champion Jonass extends MX2 points lead in Orlyonok.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle has brought KTM’s dominance to a halt in the MXGP World Championship after he broke through for a season-first victory at Tuesday’s sixth round in Orlyonok, Russia.
Desalle strung together a 1-2 scorecard at the mid-week event, earning a confidence-boosting overall win that sees him hold down third in the championship standings.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings was as consistent as ever, finishing runner-up after lodging 3-1 race results, which was still enough to strengthen his points lead over Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who wound up third on the day.
The top five was concluded by former world champions Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) and Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) in fourth and fifth respectively.
In MX2, points leader and defending champion Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) returned to the top step of the podium with a convincing 1-1 performance over teammate Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who earned a pair of seconds.
Third was credited to Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Ben Watson in what was an impressive performance, as the top five was rounded out by Michele Cervellin (Team Martin Honda) and Thomas Kjer Olsen (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing). Australian Jed Beaton (F&H Racing Kawasaki) recovered from a crash in race one for eighth, backing up the result with seventh in the final outing to be awarded eighth overall.
The next stop on the world championship calendar is scheduled for 13 May at Kegums in Latvia, marking the seventh round of the series.
