Walkner wraps up 2018 Dakar Rally as Price scores third
Final stage victory belongs to overall runner-up Benavides.
Austrian Matthias Walkner has won the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team’s 17th-straight victory in the 2018 Dakar Rally, as teammate Toby Price clinched third overall.
Walkner entered the final timed special stage – a 120km loop around the Argentinian city of Cordoba – of the rally with a healthy 22-minute lead and eighth was enough to win by 16m53s overall.
The stage went to Kevin Benavides (Monster Energy Honda) as he secured second overall, while Australia’s Price was runner-up in the final stage and rounded out the podium rankings overall, 23m01s from Walkner in a significant result for KTM’s new 450 Rally.
Yamalube Yamaha Official Rally Racing’s Rodney Faggotter was 19th on Saturday to seal him 16th overall, while third of the Aussies Scott Britnell (Grit Adventures KTM) crossed the finish in 64th after the final stage, crediting him 61st overall on debut.
