Popular Victorian still to decide on final round appearance.
Long-time supercross and motocross rider Cheyne Boyd has confirmed he’ll make a full-time campaign in the 2017 Australian Supercross Championship after making a number one-off appearances in recent years.
Boyd, who contested the Melbourne and Sydney rounds in 2016, revealed his plan is to contest the entire series, however with a clash of dates for the final round with his sisters wedding, he’s yet to determine his entry at the Queensland finale.
The Victorian believes he had been gaining momentum with each race he’s completed over the seasons, and says that by doing the opening rounds should have him primed for the prestigious Monster Energy AUS-X Open in Sydney.
“It seems like the more racing I’ve done, the better I’ve got,” Boyd explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “The goal is to be on-point at the AUS-X Open – that’s the one you want to do good at, and the same goes for the Melbourne round.
“Just by adding Jimboomba and Adelaide, you sort of race the first five rounds, so I thought I may as well. I do have a question mark on the last round because I’m pretty sure it clashes with my sister’s wedding.
“The plan is to all the rounds, but in saying that, if I’m around the top five, six or seven, anything after that then I guess I won’t.”
The 35-year-old revealed everything is currently falling into place in terms of riding, health and his business Park4MX, which has enabled the passionate racer to have another crack in the competitive series.
“At the moment, everything is falling into place with my body and mind, and with business – it’s just a lot easier at the moment. With riding, I think things are coming at me pretty slowly and it just seems easier for me at the moment. So yeah, why not go and do all the rounds?
“I’m not getting any extra support and it has nothing do with my deals, just personally, being 35 now, I won’t be having a year or two off and at 36, 37 or 38 saying I want to do supercross – it’s honestly coming to an end sooner or later.”
The Yamaha-mounted rider retired from full-time professional racing in 2012 after racing for a selection of the country’s top factory teams, along with being a regular title contender across both divisions.
The opening round of the Australian Supercross Championship is scheduled for this Saturday night, 23 September, at Jimboomba in Queensland.
