Herlings tops MXGP of USA with premier class victory
Hampshire wins MX2 as Australia's Lawrence is second.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has added another overall victory to his name at USA’s 17th round of the 2017 FIM MXGP World Championship, as AMA regular RJ Hampshire (Geico Honda) dominated the MX2 category in a special one-off appearance.
Herlings strung together an impressive 2-1 scorecard in the sands of Jacksonville to earn the win, taking the championship to the next round as Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) failed score enough points to get it done in the USA.
Newly-crowned AMA Pro Motocross champion Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was second overall with a commanding opening moto win to his name, as it was Cairoli who completed the podium in third with a strong hold on the points lead.
Fourth was credited to defending champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) with 4-7 race scores, and was followed by Max Anstie (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) in fifth, who lodged a pair of sixth place finishes.
In MX2, Hampshire claimed a controlling win over the quarter-litre field with two dominant race victories to his name.
Australian talent Hunter Lawrence (Suzuki World MX2) was runner-up with 3-2 moto results, matching his career-best finish in the world championship. The top three was rounded out by Jeremy Seewer (Suzuki World MX2) after recording 9-3 scores at the WW Motocross Park.
The top five was completed by Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory) and points leader Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in fourth and fifth respectively, as Aussie Hayden Mellross (Yamaha) was 15th overall after making his debut in the world series.
The next round of the MXGP World Championship is scheduled for 10 September, at Assen in The Netherlands, marking the penultimate stop on the calendar.
