Dunlop racers conquer Coolum MX Nationals finale

Dunlop Tyres press release:

The success continued for Dunlop-equipped racers at Coolum’s 10th and final round of the 2017 MX Nationals series on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, clinching multiple championships to cap off a stellar season.

Already crowned this year’s MX1 champion at Toowoomba’s ninth round, CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris entered Coolum as a two-time champion and without any title pressure on his shoulders.

Ferris went on to capture two strong moto victories and the overall win to round out his stellar season. His Coolum victory made it number nine for the series after missing out on just one overall win this year at Shepparton.

Behind Ferris for the round overall at Coolum it was former premier class champion Kirk Gibbs, who finished third on the MX1 podium aboard his KTM Motocross Racing Team entry.

Gibbs also captured second overall in the standings, followed by DPH Motorsport Yamaha’s Kade Mosig, who rode his Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZ450F consistently throughout the entire 10-round schedule.

In the MX2 category it was a battle down to the wire between the Dunlop-supported duo of Egan Mastin and Wilson Todd for the quarter-litre crown. In a nail-biting final moto of the day it was Mastin who rode his Davey Motorsports KTM 250 SX to victory and the title.

After taking a hard fall the day prior during free practice, it what was a valiant effort from DPH Motorsport Yamaha racer Todd, who was cleared to contest Sunday’s motos the morning of the event for second overall and in the championship.

Behind the 2017 MX2 champion Mastin and runner-up Todd, it was Serco Yamaha rookie Mitch Evans who finished third in points after claiming fourth overall at the final round of the season.

Along with the MXD championship captured by Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Cody Dyce at Port Macquarie, Dunlop racers claimed eight out of the nine championship podiums on offer within the regular MX Nationals categories – MX1, MX2 and MXD.

In the Women’s category at Coolum it was DPH Motorsport Yamaha’s Maddy Brown who claimed the round win and championship victory. Brown won three out of the four motos to edge out defending champion Jessica Moore by six points for the top spot.

In the Vets 30-39 class, Chase Mosig – older sibling to third-place MX1 holder Kade – rode his DPH Motorsport Yamaha-backed entry to victory at Coolum with a clean-sweep of both motos.

“What a great way to finish out the 2017 MX Nationals series,” said Dunlop national motorcycle manager Sebastian Mincone. “Congratulations to all of our Dunlop-shod championship winners, it has been a very successful year for us and we’re very proud to support a selection of the best racers and teams in Australia.”
