New South Welshman moves to just three points behind MX2 leader.
Davey Motorsport KTM’s Egan Mastin has played down any advantage racing a two-stoke may have contributed to his thrilling 1-1 victory at last weekend’s penultimate round of the Motul MX Nationals in Toowoomba, Queensland.
Mastin set the pace in qualifying before dominating both MX2 outings to gain 10 points on championship leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Yamaha), putting himself just three markers behind the red plate holder.
The Echo Valley circuit is notorious for its steep uphills, however the New South Welshman said the way the surface formed up by race two, it just didn’t suit the characteristics of the two-stroke, resulting in no benefit.
“I wouldn’t say it’s an advantage,” Mastin told MotoOnline.com.au. “Every [bike] has its plus and minuses, especially in that second moto when the track was pretty much hard-packed and watered, it was definitely the opposite of a two-stroke track.
“To be honest, I’d prefer a four-stroke – this is literally the only option I had this year. It’s not in the back of my mind at all, it’s actually kind of funny hearing people talk about it.
Mastin, a former MXD champion, has won the last four motos in what has been a late charge for the title as Coolum’s finale remains this weekend in Queensland.
