New South Welshman elevated to second in the championship.
Egan Mastin’s MX2 title chase is on-track follow two perfect moto scores at last weekend’s ninth round of the Motul MX Nationals in Port Macquarie, Queensland, where he dominated the quarter-litre category.
The Davey Motorsports KTM rider’s results saw him elevated to second in the championship as two rounds remain, where he trails series leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Yamaha) by 13 points.
The New South Welshman declared the title is the main goal, however he’s remaining grounded in the final stages of Australian motocross for 2017.
“This what we train for – to peak when it counts,” Mastin told MotoOnline.com.au. “It was awesome to go 1-1 today, it’s what we come here to do, so the hard work is starting to pay off. Definitely in these last two rounds we’re going to keep chipping away and go for those moto wins.
“The [championship] is obviously the main goal we’re working for, we just can’t move too forward, too fast. The big picture is definitely to get that championship wrapped up at Coolum.”
Mastin schooled the field at Port Macquarie, where he not only claimed both moto victories, but he also lodged an ultra-quick 1m47.445s lap time in race two, which was over a second quicker than his closest rivals.
“I got two good starts today,” he continued. “In the first moto I didn’t rush it too early, about halfway I dropped the hammer and ended up getting Wilson [Todd] and the moto win.
“To do that in moto two as well was definitely a punt – the track was a little slick it out there in the last moto. To get two moto wins, I couldn’t be more stoked.”
The next round of the Motul MX Nationals is slated for 13 August, at Toowoomba in Queensland, which will mark the penultimate round of the 10-stop series.
