The Motul Pirelli Sherco Off-Road Team is standing on top of the Australian Off-Road Championship podium for the second time in two seasons. This time, it’s seasoned Master’s Class campaigner Derek Grundy in the limelight after clinching the 2017 Master’s Class Championship at Kyogle in northern NSW over the weekend.

Rounds seven and eight of the Championship consisted of two separate enduro rounds on steep and technical terrain. Riders faced up to seven-hours of ride time on Saturday that incorporated seven special tests. Sunday was another big day with up to six-hours on the trails, covering eight special tests.

Grundy came out firing on Saturday and never looked back. “It was a big weekend on the bike,” stated Grundy. “We had a mix of slippery trail in the mornings with lots of hills, very technical with sharp inclines and loads of single trail that required plenty of concentration. I placed first in class and 34th outright which is my best outright result ever on Saturday.”

Grundy took the Master’s class win again on Sunday which also saw him take out the Championship. A massive 67-point lead with two Championship rounds remaining ensures the 52-year-old Tasmanian off-road racing legend cannot be beaten.

“I’m really happy to with this Championship,” Grundy continued. “I’ve been second two times in the 4-Day and second in the AORC last year. I shed a tear on the last lap on Sunday because I’ve tried so many times and opportunities at my age are limited. I wanted to get it done so I can move on and give opportunities to others in the Sherco Team.”

Grundy’s AORC season has been incredible having won seven of the eight Championship rounds to-date, his worst result being a second place.

“I must say the Sherco 300 SEF-R is such a great bike for me. I’m just so comfortable riding it and when I have the support of the Team back in the pits it makes it so much fun to go racing. Our Team is fantastic, we have a good vibe going and Dave Suter always has the bikes beautifully prepared.”

Although Grundy already has the Championship in hand, the passionate racer will compete at the final two Championship rounds to be held in Omeo, Victoria, August 5 & 6 before retiring from Australian Championship racing.

“I will race the final two rounds. I want to see the season through to the end and see if I can pick up another win because this will be my last. And I want to be there to support the Team because they’ve done so much to support me.”
